Brian Goodman – President & Founder
Brian Goodman is an experienced data analyst, business modeler and strategist with over a decade of experience in helping clients and other consulting firms make data driven decisions. Brian specializes in collecting and managing data and building dynamic analytical models and that inform and drive action.
Brian has worked with a range of clients from several of the world’s largest banks, energy and telecommunication companies to early stage startups and is experienced in interacting with executives or entrepreneurs, bringing the right level of analysis to the question being addressed. Brian is an Associate of The Service Profit Chain and the Atwood Consulting Group where he provides support on data analysis and modeling.
In addition to managing First Steps Consulting, Brian is the System and Innovation Manager for the City of Boston’s Office of Business Development where he advises on systems strategy for the department and manages an innovation pipeline focused on identifying and assessing innovative ways for the City of Boston to server the business community.
Prior employers included The May Company, Monitor Group, ACCION and the UNDP as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bulgaria.
When Brian is not working, he is training for half iron triathlons or spending time with his beautiful wife and daughter.
Brian earned his MBA in entrepreneurship from Babson College in Wellesley, MA and holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Additional studies on Systems Design, Financial Modeling and Statistics have been completed at Harvard, MIT and the University of Manchester, England.
Alice Stein – Chief Marketing Officer
Alice is a multi-disciplined brand marketer and digital strategist with 15 years of experience working client-side for startups and global corporations. Her industries of expertise include professional services, financial services, e-commerce, life sciences and nonprofit. Some of her clients have included The Apprentice, Bank of America, Chase, CitiMortgage, Compliance LP, DharmaCrafts, Oracle, OrientalFurniture.com, Overstock.com, Putnam Investments and ServiceMagic.com.
Alice once aspired to be a physician, but after landing her first job at a boutique agency as a web developer, she got a taste for marketing and quickly found her calling in the world of business. Alice draws from a wide variety of experiences in marketing, technology, communications and business development to help clients develop marketing programs that maximize on customer value and results.
Prior to joining First Steps Consulting, Alice held marketing leadership roles at Boston Rising, Randstad, Vedior and LendingTree. She recently launched STEIN+PARTNERS, a marketing consultancy focused on growing brands through Sales, Marketing and Technology alignment.
She is actively involved in the marketing community and serves as the President of the American Marketing Association – Boston Chapter, where she oversees one of the largest chapters in the country. Her involvement with the American Marketing Association is one of her biggest personal passions.
Alice holds an MS in Communications Management and BS in Biology from Simmons College.
Brian Worobey – Senior Consultant
Brian helps clients develop technology strategies, design data centers, and analyze complex data in high performance computing environments. Brian also helps startups and non-profits advance their offerings through strategic planning, and technology architecture design for ‘infrastructure and software as a service’ delivery.
As Principal of Wrenkai Consulting, Brian Worobey serves as consultant on strategic technology initiatives for a number of key clients, including the City of Boston and the State of MA. In addition as an Associate of Vantage Technology Consulting Group.
Before joining First Steps Consulting, Brian served as the CEO of openairboston.net (OAB) a non-profit, public/private partnership with a goal of lessening the digital divide by providing Internet access, computers, and training to help families and to support businesses in under-served neighborhoods.
Brian was formerly Vice President and CIO of the Museum of Science, responsible for the creation and implementation of a Museum-wide information systems strategy. Since he started at the Museum of Science in 1996, Brian was instrumental in creating partnerships with leading technology companies, as well as providing strategic, architectural, and fundraising support for the Museum’s technological and educational initiatives. Through Brian’s ecommerce and customer relationship technologies, sales moved mostly to the web allowing resource availability to improve member retention and growth.
Prior to joining the Museum, Brian was the Director of MBA Technology Services at Harvard Business School and Assistant Director for Network Services at Boston College.
Brian has a BA from Clark University, writes and presents on technology topics and is a performing musician.
Michael Sattler – Senior Consultant
Michael Sattler has been in the internet business since 1995. He founded two companies in the late 90s, spent a decade helping grow another one to more than $100 million in revenue, and then went back and founded several more. Combined with extensive technology experience and a Babson MBA, he has developed a unique entrepreneurial perspective on business and engineering.
Prior to joining First Steps Consulting Michael spent a decade in the website hosting industry, serving as SVP/Engineering for Endurance International – the nation’s largest shared hosting provider – where he helped grow the company from 12,000 customers to more than 1.5 million. Michael’s tenure gave him deep expertise in hosting technologies, billing and payment systems, and scalable application platforms. He also developed a large number of web-based products and enterprise-level applications, pioneered the company’s industry-dominating migration strategy, and grew a team of engineers and product managers from four to more than fifty in the U.S., Canada, and India.
In addition to being a hands-on technologist, Michael’s startup experience has put him in charge of many of the functions a young company needs: from strategy and fundraising to marketing, operations, and sales. His breadth of experience has led to recent engagements as a startup coach and consulting technologist for a variety of early-stage companies in and around Boston. He also speaks and blogs about technology and entrepreneurship.

Francisco Neri – Senior Consultant – South America
Francisco is a results-driven, innovative professional, with over 7 years’ of experience in marketing, sales and trade marketing. He specializes in product development, constantly focused on heavily involving the needs of both the client and the end-user when attempting to find a solution.
Nowadays, Francisco enjoys the fact that his job allows him to both think ahead as well as deliver now. He also takes great satisfaction in creating innovative marketing solutions and watching them deliver continuous results to the customer over the long term.
Prior to joining First Step Consulting, Francisco worked in a wide range of industries: food and beverage, fast moving consumer goods, healthcare and textile, including companies such as Kellogg’s and Reckitt Benckiser. His responsibilities comprised the strategic management, planning and implementation of different branding initiatives to ensure a significant market share growth along with financial decisions to increase profits.
In addition to his corporate experience, Francisco was the Co-Founder of a few start-ups in Venezuela. He strongly believes that planning can make a big difference when starting your business, however, hard commitment, passion, and why not, a little bit of luck must be part of the equation.
Francisco received his Master’s in Business Administration from Hult International Business School in Boston and San Francisco and previously studied at the Institute of Superior Education in Administration (IESA), earning a certificate in Marketing and Innovation, and Trade Marketing. He now lives in Venezuela with his wife, golfs all too infrequently and has an overwhelming passion for soccer.
Gary Goodman – Senior Consultant
Gary Goodman is an innovative marketing strategist and manager with practical experience driving market growth and identifying new customer driven opportunities. Gary specializes in the collection and analysis of customer data to uncover and define new markets; develop marketing automation programs, improve customer service delivery; optimize lead conversion funnels or drive online cross promotional campaigns.
In addition to providing marketing strategy support to First Steps Consulting, Gary is the Online Sales Manager for the pioneering Fair Trade Coffee Company, Equal Exchange, where he launched and oversees a growing division of online coffee sales.
Gary has been part of the marketing team at Equal Exchange for the past 12 years and has helped market the company from a small, innovative Fair Trade coffee company to one of the most respected brands in Fair Trade Coffee
Gary earned his Bachelors in Business from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and yes, he is the brother of the other guy on this page, Brian.
Leo Ryan – Senior Energy Consultant
Leo Ryan is a business development professional with a track record of success in complex, relation-driven sales environments. Leo’s primary professional focus has been on demonstrating the business case for investment in clean tech, smart grid, and renewable energy investments.
In addition to his work with First Steps Consulting, Leo is a member of EH&E’s executive team where Leo is currently focused on developing and implementing sales strategies, identifying new markets for environmental, health, safety and energy services for institutional clients and supporting strategic consulting initiatives focused on energy efficiency.
In his role as Vice President for Business Development at OutSmart Power Systems, Leo launched OutSmart’s energy monitoring technology into key commercial and industrial verticals (supermarkets, data centers, life sciences) developed strategic and channel partnerships with a variety of energy related companies and supported capital raising activities for OutSmart.
As a Business Development Manager for EnerNOC Leo played a key role in developing and launching EnerNOC’s energy efficiency and carbon accounting solutions. Leo’s work in developing relationships with key decision makers in utilities helped EnerNOC’s EfficiencySMART’s solution receive utility support.
As a Senior Consultant with Arthur D Little, Leo was responsible for the completion of domestic and international occupational safety, industrial hygiene and environmental consulting assignments. In this role Leo completed compliance inspections, health and safety program development and presentation, EHS management system evaluations, indoor air quality inspections and litigation support.
Leo has an MS in Work Environment Policy, from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and a BA in Economics from Fairfield University.
Kanav Hasija – Senior Data Analyst
Kanav is an experienced researcher, business modeler and strategist with over 5 years of experience in helping academic researchers and other consulting firms in structuring and accelerating their research. Kanav specializes in collecting and managing data and building dynamic analytical models.
Kanav has worked with a range of clients including some of the top universities in the US and abroad, he has consulted and assisted researchers from Harvard, Stanford, MIT and many more with data mining, statistical analysis and big data implementations.
In addition to supporting First Steps Consulting, Kanav is the Chief Strategy and Research Office at Innovaccer. Innovaccer is a research acceleration firm which he co-founded with the idea of making research and analysis simpler. Kanav works with corporations, think-tanks and academia and provides assistance in data driven analysis.
Kanav earned his masters in Intellectual Property from the Franklin Pierce Law Centre and did undergraduate studies from IIT Kharagpur in Mechanical Engineering.

Ankit Maheshwari – Senior Data Scientist

John Mickelson – Senior Statistician
Mr. Mickelson provides First Steps Consulting with advanced data analysis and statistical interpretation.
He has provided consulting services for companies such as Lotus Corporation, Deloitte & Touche, Gillette, Microsoft, Equitable National Operations Center, Forum Corp, TAP Pharmaceuticals Inc, Irving Oil, Wachovia, Sun Trust Bank, and Hemsley Fraser.
John brings expertise in survey instrument validation, model validation, determining predictors and drivers of successful outcomes, revealing primary factors underlying response data, analyzing employee promotion patterns for evidence of bias in promotion policies, and developing influence benchmarks.
John is also specializes in statistical modeling techniques such as linear and logistic regression, principal components and factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and data mining analytics such as decision trees (rule induction), neural networks, association rules and sequence detection.
Mr. Mickelson received training in psychometrics, data analysis and evaluation from the University of Iowa’s Lindquist Center for Measurement and Harvard University. He has worked extensively developing psychometric assessments, determining the reliability and validity of psychometric measures.
From 2003 to 2008 Mr. Mickelson joined and then headed the Providence Public Schools Office of Research, Assessment, and Evaluation where he developed an extensive system of interim assessments monitoring the progress of student achievement of curriculum learning standards.
From 2009-2010 he was Co-Director for a project funded by the David Lynch Foundation teaching staff and students in public schools innovative techniques for improving learning/teaching and stress reduction as well as coordinating the project’s research component.
Most recently Mr. Mickelson has been involved in developing and validating assessments used by the VA Administration, developing models to improve customer response in the banking industry, serves as Senior Associate for the Service Profit Chain Institute and as senior researcher developing norms, dashboards, and models and for the Reina Trust Building Institute for major corporations and universities.
Mr. Mickelson resides in Central Massachusetts.
